Day 9 – Driving Day

Dead straight road in Wyoming
Huge Windmill Farm (100+) in WY
Rock formations in WY
Rocky canyons and green valleys in Utah
Storm clouds in Idaho
Today was our longest driving day of the trip, 528 miles. We drove from Laramie, WY, to Burley, ID. It really didn’t take that long with an 80 MPH speed limit most of the way, just a little over 7 hours. The scenery today was fantastic and we wanted to share some of it.

Golden Spike Site

We did not have any sightseeing planned but made an impromptu stop at the Golden Spike National Historic Site at Promontory, just north of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. It turned out to be lucky for us as they were holding their annual Railroader’s Festival. We missed the re-enactment of the meeting of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads which completed the transcontinental railroad in 1869, but they did allow us to climb on the locomotives for a closer look. Pretty interesting.
